read more »What is HMHEC?
The Hickory Metro Higher Ed Center (HMHEC) is a collaborative partnership of colleges and universities in western North Carolina. HMHEC's mission is to support and enhance the educational attainment and economic development of the region by offering a broad range of programming in targeted areas of study for students of all ages through off-campus programs in Hickory, NC.
HMHEC was established in 2003 as a partnership between Appalachian State University, Catawba Valley Community College, and Lenoir-Rhyne College in collaboration with the City of Hickory and Catawba County.
Since its establishment, additional colleges and universities in western North Carolina have joined the partnership: University of North Carolina Chapel Hill; University of North Carolina Charlotte; Western Carolina University; Northwest Area Health Education Center of Wake Forest University Medical Center; Winston-Salem State University; and Mountain State University.
Degree-seeking students from throughout the Greater Hickory Metro area apply to one of HMHEC's partner institutions and pay the institution's tuition and fees. Upon admittance into the college or university, students attend off-campus programs in Hickory, NC, or study on-line, and earn their degrees from the partner college or university.
What Educational Degrees Do HMHEC's Partners Offer?
HMHEC's partners offer more than 70 different undergraduate degree and graduate degree programs from colleges and universities in western North Carolina, and certificate programs to more than 500 students each semester. Degree programs include: business administration, criminal justice, leadership, library science, nursing, psychology, social work, and teacher education. How are Degree Programs Designed?
Degree programs from colleges and universities in western North Carolina offered through HMHEC are designed to meet the needs of adult learners of all ages and backgrounds. Most programs are taught as face-to-face with faculty members traveling to HMHEC to teach and meet with students, others are designed exclusively as on-line programs, and many are designed as hybrid programs, including both formats. Most are taught during the evenings and/or weekends for working adults, but others are designed during the day. Some are offered as full-time programs and others are offered as part-time programs.
Since HMHEC's establishment, more than 600 individuals have completed their degrees through off-campus programs in Hickory, NC thanks to HMHEC's partners.
